Logan for CVM Swim Meet ~ May 20-21, 2011

On May 20-21, we had the first swim meet of the Long Course season. We traveled to Logan for Ryan to compete in the Cache Valley Invitational. Since Ryan just turned 11 on April 25, he “aged up” to the 11-12 age group. This was his first official Long Course meet (he was still on the pre-comp team last summer), AND his first meet in the 11-12 age group. We focused on setting new times for this age group, and not necessarily winning.

Friday afternoon/evening was FREEZING! It was an outside meet, and we’ve had a very cold, wet Spring. I packed everything I could think of to keep us warm. We were happy when Ryan’s events were over and we could go. Friday he swam the 50 Fly and the 50 Free. In the 50 Free, Ryan won his heat by about 5 body lengths! The whole Tsunami team was cheering for him. It was fun to see and hear.

Saturday morning, we had breakfast at our hotel breakfast area. At the table next to us, there were four people who were obviously not from Utah. They were wearing suit-type uniforms, and two had Southern accents. We were chuckling at some of their comments and expressions. Papa noticed that they had nametags on, and noted their names. As we went to the meet, there was a national dog show going on across the street. Between Ryan’s events, Papa walked over to check out the dog show, and picked up a program. He realized that our four breakfast friends were the judges at the dog show! He was impressed that we were in such “good company” at breakfast.

Even though there is still a lot of snow on the mountains, the kids had fun playing football between their events. (Ryan is catching the ball in this photo.)

Saturday, Ryan swam the 100 Free, 50 Breaststroke, and 50 Back. He achieved his goal in all 5 of his events – setting his own “best times” in this age division for Long Course. This meet did something really cute. They had small prizes (like from Oriental Trading) for kids who beat their own best times. Since Ryan had just aged-up, all five of his events were his best times! He ended up placing between 8th and 16th in his events, but he was pretty excited that he got prizes for each event. It was a cute idea.

Saturday was warm and sunny. In our attempt to make sure that we were warm enough, I did not even think about sunscreen. We all got sunburned! It was about the only sunny day for a couple of MONTHS before and a couple of weeks after. We kept joking that we got sunburned on the only sunny day so far this year!

One REALLY funny thing – at a meet several months ago, the most impressive swimmer – a kid about 17 years old – had “mom” written on his arm with a heart around it. The swimmers all have Sharpies to write their events, heats, and lanes on their arms. Most also write themselves a little motivational note, too. Ryan and I have a code – PTTE, meaning “push to the end” that we’ve written on his arm for a long time. (Side note, I’ve also attached the picture of the “PTTE” that he wrote on my hand during my comps.) When he saw that impressive kid with the “mom tattoo” a few months ago, he started wanting that on his arm, too. Well, his upper arms haven’t seen the sun since last August, so they got a little sunburned. When he scrubbed off the “mom tattoo,” his arm was WHITE where it was! (I’m writing this on June 8, and we were just laughing tonight that it’s still clearly visible.)

After Ryan finished his events on Saturday, we had lunch at Sonic, and then went to the Gossner outlet store. MMMMmmmm!!!! We bought a case of rootbeer milk, a case of cookies & cream milk, and a case of mango milk, as well as a few different cheeses. I thought that would hold us until we went through Logan again on our way to Bear Lake next month, but we’re already almost out!
We’re so proud of Ryan! We know it was hard going from being one of the best swimmers in the 9-10 age group to being a middle-of-the-pack swimmer in the 11-12 age group. Give him a couple of meets, and I’m sure he’ll be right back at the top again! :)
