Tour of Utah, Swimming Pool Edition: Devil Ray Classic in Draper

Are we crazy for attending a swim meet on the last day of school? Perhaps. But so were dozens of other families!

After Ryan’s 6th grade promotion on Friday, June 1, he and I headed to the Draper pool. Rara & Papa helped host a wedding breakfast on Saturday morning, so they spent Friday afternoon/evening setting up and getting ready.

On Friday, Ryan swam the 50 free (beat his own time; we don’t know where he placed yet)…

50 breaststroke next to his best friend, James (don’t know where he placed yet)

Talking with Coach Jill and friend, Shad W...

And 400 IM (beat his own time; we think he placed third in his age group). I didn’t take pictures for two reasons. First, in most of the long course distance events, swimmers need to provide their own timers. I was his timer. Second, the meet went so long that the 400 IM started after dark!

Since we were right at Point of the Mountain, there were also about 15 paragliders flying around. I took a break from taking pictures of swimmers (and reading articles for my dissertation) and took pictures of the paragliders instead. The moon had just come up, and was huge above the eastern mountains. People probably thought I was crazy, but look at these fun pictures!

After the 400 IM, we left the pool and stopped at the Wendy’s drive-through for dinner. We had been there since 3:30, with only snacks. I know, bad mom. Meets are supposed to be limited to 4 hours. We already scratched one event to try keep it within time, but it didn’t happen. With it being the last day of school, none of us expected so many kids to participate. We thought they’d all be out partying. We forgot – these are swimmers! Swimming in a meet with friends IS partying!

We got home at 10:40 pm Friday night, and then got up at 6:00 am Saturday morning to do it all again.

I was not able to go to the meet on Saturday, so Ryan went with his best friend, James, and his dad. I don’t have any pictures, but Ryan swam the 50 back (and beat his own time) and the 50 fly. Again, we don’t know where he placed with them yet.
